Three ways to build reading confidence

The two decks work together to create a genuine learning progression.

How the two decks work

AGO Phonics Zero contains two complementary 54-card decks. Each deck includes 36 learning cards and 18 action cards. Together, the decks provide practice with 96 different words, most of which follow regular consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) spelling patterns and can be decoded using basic phonics rules.

In Deck 1, each learning card contains three illustrated words. Some cards group rhyming words, such as “cat,” “hat,” and “rat,” while others contrast different short-vowel sounds, such as “hat,” “hit,” and “hut.” The pictures help beginning readers connect each printed word with its meaning and pronunciation.

In Deck 2, each learning card displays six words in mixed order without picture clues. This encourages players to recognize and decode the written words independently.

Most of the vocabulary consists of three-letter CVC words. The game also includes a small number of two-letter words, such as “ox,” “ax,” and “up,” and some four-letter words ending in “ck.” A few shortened forms are used where suitable vocabulary is limited, including “pup” for “puppy,” “sax” for “saxophone,” and “ted” for “teddy.” Twelve words are repeated across the two decks.

The decks can be played separately using standard AGO Last Card rules or combined for additional matching and reading activities. Matching illustrated words with their word-only counterparts helps develop visual scanning, letter recognition, vocabulary recall, and independent decoding skills.

1: Start with picture words

Begin with the illustrated deck to become familiar with the words and their spellings.

2: Match across both decks

Find a picture word and its counterpart on the words only deck, practicing letter recognition and scanning skills.

3: Use the word deck independently

Once ready, players decode six words on every turn – a challenging final step that takes some practice.
