“And One More”: An AGO Phonics Vocabulary Challenge

“And One More” makes AGO Phonics more challenging by asking players to produce an additional word containing the target phoneme.

On a player’s turn, they read the three words on their card and then add another example of their own. For example, the D card might be read as “dog, duck, donut, dinosaur.” Any appropriate word containing the target sound can be accepted.

The activity becomes progressively more demanding with higher AGO Phonics levels and less common spelling patterns. It can also lead naturally to useful discussion—for example, when students notice that different letter patterns can represent the same sound.

Collaborative variation

Choose one card and ask the whole class to build a list of additional examples. Write the words on the board and discuss unfamiliar vocabulary as it appears.

Super “Add One More” variation

For advanced students, players take turns contributing a new example for the same target phoneme. A player is out if they cannot answer within five seconds, repeat a word, or give an incorrect example. Continue until one player remains; that player wins the card.

This variation works especially well with carefully selected higher-level phoneme cards. Record useful new words so students can review them later.
