Build an AGO Phonics Board Game Race Track

AGO Phonics cards can be arranged across desks or tables to create a simple board-game race track. The activity combines phonics practice with dice, counters and rules designed by the class.

What you need

  • A selection of AGO Phonics cards
  • One counter for each player
  • One die

Arrange the cards in a continuous track. Players take turns rolling the die and moving their counter along the cards. Whenever a player lands on a phoneme card, they read the card aloud, including the target sound.

Action cards can be included and given special meanings. For example, a Change Direction card might require the player to roll again and move backwards, while a Jump card could give the player another turn.

Rather than prescribing every rule, invite the class to decide what the action cards should do before the game begins. Negotiating the rules can become a useful speaking activity in its own right.

The first player to reach the end of the track wins. For a longer game, create a winding track or require players to reach the final card with an exact roll.
