Rock–Scissors–Paper Knockout is a noisy, energetic large-class game for AGO Q&A or AGO Phonics. Each encounter combines language practice with a simple elimination contest.
Give every student one numbered card. Students move around the room and find an opponent. With Q&A cards, both players ask and answer their questions. With Phonics cards, both players read their cards aloud.
The pair then plays Rock–Scissors–Paper. The winner takes the other player’s cards and continues looking for a new opponent. The losing player is eliminated and moves to the side as a spectator.
When a player has collected several cards, they choose one different card to use in each new encounter. Play continues until only two students remain. They complete one final language exchange and Rock–Scissors–Paper round to decide the winner.
Because eliminated students receive no further practice, keep rounds short or let spectators support the remaining players. In very large classes, run several smaller knockout groups so more students remain active for longer.
